A check-engine light means the vehicle’s onboard diagnostic system detected a condition that needs attention. A diagnostic trouble code identifies the system that reported a problem, but it does not always identify the failed part.
What diagnosis can involve
- Reading stored and pending diagnostic trouble codes
- Reviewing scan data and system operating information
- Visual inspection for obvious damage, leaks or connection issues
- Testing components or circuits when needed
- Using vehicle-specific service information to confirm the cause
Steady light vs. flashing light
A steady check-engine light generally means the vehicle should be evaluated soon. A flashing light can indicate a more urgent condition that may damage the catalytic converter or affect drivability. Follow your owner’s manual and avoid unnecessary driving if the vehicle is running poorly.
Other warning lights
Modern vehicles can display separate warnings for brakes, ABS, battery/charging, tire pressure, cooling temperature and other systems. Those warnings should be interpreted in the context of the vehicle rather than treated as interchangeable with a check-engine light.
Why proper troubleshooting saves guesswork
Replacing a part based only on a code can lead to unnecessary repairs if wiring, sensors, vacuum leaks or other conditions are responsible. Diagnosis should establish the cause before parts are recommended.
